On her 9th album, contemporary blues artist Lisa Biales stretches out on "The Beat of My Heart", delivering a powerful set of unforgettable songs from the perspective of a strong independent woman.
Biales grew up in a musical family and learned singing from her mother. In 2015, she found a 78 record that was recorded back in 1947. It had one song on it, Crying Over You, written by Alberta Roberts, Lisa’s mom. “Hearing my mother’s voice after all these years brought a chill to the bone. I realized that I had to put her song on this project.” You’ll hear Lisa’s mother at 24 years of age, sing the first verse of the song and as Lisa takes over it’s a goose bumpy experience.
Produced by drummer Tony Braunagel (Taj Mahal, Phantom Blues Band, Bonnie Raitt) this recording is full of surprises and each song has a vibe and groove that sets it apart from all the others.
"Lisa Biales has one of those great voices of our times." - Cascade Blues Association
"Biales’ voice is a wonderful instrument.” - Graham Clarke, Friday Blues Fix
"...a powerful voice with a sizable range and uncanny pitch that speaks directly to your heart. The trick with a performer like Biales is to not fall for the idea that any of it is as simple as she makes it sound. She is a performer’s performer in that sense." - Gregory Victor, Parcbench Culture Editor, NY

Marty's review: Lisa Biales delivers the blues with soul, brass, gospel and funk on this latest 12 track release. The songs are from a woman's perspective and Lisa's strong and powerful voice comes out at you up front and centre. Her choice of songwriters include Mabel Scott, Eric Bibb and Nina Simone and the smooth production certainly brings out the finest in this amazing talent. This is one you will be playing often. My favourite tracks, "Messin' Around With the Blues" and the blues/jazz sway of "Romance In the Dark".
